Destination information:

Cusco, located in the Peruvian Andes, is a historically and culturally rich city that was once the capital of the Inca Empire. Known as “The Navel of the World,” Cusco is a magical city that combines a rich cultural heritage with stunning mountain scenery.

The Plaza de Armas is the heart of the city and a perfect starting point for exploring Cusco. Surrounded by colonial buildings and with an impressive cathedral on one side, this plaza is where locals and tourists gather to enjoy the lively atmosphere and architectural beauty.

Cusco is famous for its magnificent Inca ruins. The most famous is the nearby citadel of Machu Picchu, considered one of the New Wonders of the World and an unforgettable experience for visitors. Other nearby ruins include Sacsayhuamán, Q'enqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay, all representative of the incredible architecture and urban planning of the ancient Inca empire.

The San Blas neighborhood is another Cusco landmark, known for its narrow cobblestone streets and local artisans' workshops. Here, visitors can find a wide variety of traditional and contemporary art, such as weaving, ceramics, and paintings.

Cusco's gastronomy is also a delight for the senses. Local restaurants offer a mix of traditional Andean flavors with modern influences. Popular dishes include cuy (guinea pig), chicharrón (fried meat), and rocoto relleno (stuffed rocoto).

The city of Cusco is also home to a large number of colonial churches that combine Incan architecture with Spanish influence. The Church of Santo Domingo, built on the foundations of the Coricancha Temple (the Incan sun temple), is a prominent example of this unique fusion of styles.

In addition to its rich history, Cusco offers a wide range of outdoor activities, such as hiking in the surrounding areas of the city and visits to local communities in the nearby valleys. It is also the starting point for those who wish to undertake the Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu.

In short, Cusco is a magical destination that captivates visitors with its ancient history, colonial charm and natural beauty. It is a must-see for those who wish to immerse themselves in the culture and spirituality of the ancient Incas while enjoying the magnificent beauty of the Peruvian Andes.
